Are You Intuitive? (Know What Kind of Intuitive You Are)

“It’s really more of a feeling than a voice – a whispery sensation that pulsates just beneath the surface of your being…”   This is how Oprah Winfrey described her intuition.

From Oprah Winfrey to Albert Einstein, many top leaders around the globe ascribe their success to having followed their intuition.  To a large extent, intuition is the muse in CEO decision-making and many real-life examples from these power-figures have even shown how by going with their gut instincts have helped them make faster, more accurate decisions.

Is the intuitive ability reserved solely for the highly intelligent CEO-types and super-psychic crystal ball readers?  The answer is NO.  We all have intuitive abilities; it is a matter of learning how your intuition flows and how to harness it.

What Exactly is Intuition?

Intuition, sometimes known as gut feelings, is the ability to know something without logical or analytic reasoning.  Much like “knowing without knowing”, a person’s intuition comes from the unconscious, non-cognitive part of our brain.

Since there is no logic to it, many people also receive their intuitive cues in different ways.   Some might get a cue in the form of a ‘feeling’ (much like Oprah), others get messages that seem to ring through their mind, and there are also those who claimed to see visions.

Whichever way that the intuitive cue reaches a person, it may not always be received because many simply reject such gut feelings as nonsense, while others might just be too busy in their monkey mind to discern these premonitions.

The Science of Intuition

In many scientific studies about intuition, most researches agree that these gut feelings are the result of active processing of the brain.  Primarily, the brain is an intelligent organ and it can compare incoming information and current experiences against experience, stored knowledge and memories to ‘predict’ an outcome.  This is described in what scientists call the “predictive processing framework”.

According to Dr Judith Orloff MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA who help women executive clients develop their intuition, she believes that intuition operates through the entire right side of our brain, the brain’s hippocampus and through our gut.  The power of our right brain is extremely formidable, if you have yet to discover Dr Jill Bolte Taylor’s Ted Talk about how she was transformed after witnessing her life through her right brain when her left one was completely shut down after a stroke, do check out that video.

In another study in the University of New South Wales, researchers have also explained that intuition is more than a mere feeling.  They have even developed measurable methods to quantify intuition, proving that intuition is not just a myth but one that can be measured scientifically.

Types of Intuition

While some people might be more in tune with their intuition, everyone can improve their intuition but the first step to this expanded awareness is to first understand what type of intuitive you are and in what ways are you more likely to receive these cues.

Generally, intuitive abilities are divided into four types – claircognizance, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience.  Read through the descriptions below to discover which you might have.

Claircognizance

Knowing without knowing.

Individuals who are claircognizant will usually experience a sudden clear knowing even without prior knowledge or experience.  The idea of “knowing without knowing” is truly reflected in such discerning ability.

Some people describe this sudden knowing like light-bulb moment when something just clicked, and solution just appears from nowhere.  The brain receives a sudden download of information even though the person may not have prior knowledge or experience in the matter.

People who have this ability are often open to learning and able to appreciate ideas and concepts without discrimination because they can discern beyond personal and societal biases to tap into their intuition.  Such individuals often know facts without prior knowledge of the subject, or they can easily understand the dynamics of a situation even without being involved.  One such example is knowing a person is dishonest or trustworthy at first sight.

Some people with claircognizance ability claimed that they often derive accurate conclusions just by having conversations with stakeholders.  For others, they just know the exact questions to ask so that the truth can come to light.

Clairvoyance

Flash of Insights.

Clairvoyance is probably the most commonly known out of the four ‘Clairs’.  Having the clairvoyant ability does not naturally mean that one will see ghosts or the extra-terrestrials, neither does it mean that the person can read the future.  It simply means receiving flashes of insights in the form of images or visions that give clarity to a situation.

Clairvoyant individuals like visual harmony and many of them are artistic or creative types who have an excellent eye for putting together wardrobes, interior design, and such.

Some people with such discerning ability can receive answers and insights through images or messages that they see in their surroundings.  These individuals are very visual people, for example, they are more likely to remember a person’s name by visualising the spelling in their mind than merely listening to how the name is pronounced.

Of course, at a more profound level, a person who has a well-developed clairvoyant ability may get flashes of future events and visions in their minds’ eyes when they tap into their intuition for answers.

Clairsentience

Emotional and physical sensing.

Those with clairsentient ability tend to “sense” and “feel” premonitions.  Unlike clairvoyant who sees visions, clairsentients feel their surroundings and allow their emotions or bodily sensations to guide them.

It is common for those with such ability to feel the emotion of people around them and even take on the same emotion if they are unaware of their ability. Once these individuals can decipher if the feelings they are sensing are their own emotions or others’, they will master their intuitive ability more accurately.

For those with well-developed clairsentient abilities, body sensing can even help to discern the good from the bad.  This is often explained as a physical contraction or tightness when they are near a negative person, situation or object, and a physical expansiveness or ease when encountering positive ones.  Interestingly, some individuals with well-trained body sensing abilities can even use it to detect food allergies!

Clairaudience

Audible communications.

This is the ability to sense audible frequencies and sound vibrations” within or in the surrounding.  Individuals with clairaudient ability to receive their intuitive cues through words that they hear inside or outside of their mind.   Their ability to listen and communicate can be their strength as they can extract more meaning and intuitive cues from these methods as compared to others.  Their intuition speaks to them with words that they hear inside or outside your mind.

People who have clairaudience ability claimed that such intuitive messages come in the form of an empowering thought – they are assuring and calm, never egoistic or rushed.  In other cases, people with such ability can draw out more meaningful cues from conversations, audible sources or even songs that they listened to.

Those who are clairaudient are usually more sensitive to sound frequencies.  Even in their immediate environment, they are more likely to be sensitive to noise than others.  Many sound healers are also clairaudient because they have the innate ability to navigate through sound vibrations.
